IN SHORT - WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
If the name « Brian Oldrieve » doesn’t ring a bell, allow me to fill you in. This agricultural « hero » was once the most successful commercial farmer in Zimbabwe. In spite of his success, he sacrificed his career in order to develop farming techniques that had for aim to help rural farmers, harvest to their land’s full potential.
We first visited Brian Oldreive in Zimbabwe in 2006. What a wonderful experience! Learning about his farming techniques made our hearts beat faster, because they signified to us renewed hope for struggling farmers in remote areas of Africa.
Today these techniques are introduced in 28 countries on millions of hectares. Many lives are changed, many empty stomachs are filled! The techniques have been adopted by many organisations reaching out into remote areas. These include:
Touching Africa Zambia was founded at that time in the idea of bringing this knowledge to Zambia and the DRC. Many farmers have attended our free courses over the years and these revelations started spreading like wildfire as they tried the techniques, stated their success and started to witness about the success of these programs.
With such a growing hunger among the farmers to learn more, excel and become independent, Liseli Farms came into being as a « test&training » farm. In our hothouse and the fields of Liseli Farms, new techniques and crops are being tested and seedlings are grown. Additionally, we train farmers on our premises and teach them everything, from preparing the fields to commercializing the crops.
You can read more about our « small beginnings » here with articles that discuss projects such as cabbage and tomato farming, apiculture, our first-ever hothouse project, etc
